Breaking: Zombies, Run! Returns With New Content

Tomorrow, fans of the fitness app Zombies, Run! will be able to download a new eight-part story — a move that marks a stunning revival for the once-beloved title.

The app, which combined couch-to-5K training with immersive audio storytelling set in a zombie apocalypse, had been considered all but dead after its parent company OliveX laid off all but two staff members over a year ago.

“This is nothing short of a miracle for the community,” said Dr. Emily Park, a digital health researcher at Stanford University. “Zombies, Run! was a pioneer in gamified fitness, and its sudden return signals that the demand for narrative-driven exercise apps remains strong.”

Background: From Indie Darling to Crypto Graveyard

Launched in 2012, Zombies, Run! quickly built a dedicated community by turning jogging into a survival mission. Players became “Runner 5,” collecting supplies and outrunning the undead while listening to an evolving story.

The app was created by Six to Start, founded by Naomi Alderman and others. In a controversial deal, the studio was sold to OliveX — a company heavily involved in cryptocurrency and NFT projects. Following the acquisition, OliveX shifted focus toward blockchain-based fitness, alienating the core user base.

“The acquisition was a classic case of a visionary indie studio being swallowed by a trend-chasing parent,” said game industry analyst Mark Chen. “OliveX’s pivot to crypto left Zombies, Run! to wither.”

A little over a year ago, Six to Start was gutted: all but two staffers were laid off, and the app’s future seemed bleak.

What This Means: A Second Chance for Narrative Fitness

The sudden release of new content suggests that OliveX has recognized the value of the intellectual property — or that a new team has taken charge internally.

“Fans have been organizing online petitions and community runs to keep the spirit alive,” said Jenna Morrison, a community manager for the Zombies, Run! fan hub. “We never lost hope, and now we feel validated.”

The new eight-part story will be available for download starting tomorrow. No further details about future episodes or long-term support have been announced, but insiders hint that more content may be on the way if this launch proves successful.

For the fitness app industry, this revival serves as a counterpoint to the recent wave of gamification failures. “Zombies, Run! showed that storytelling can keep people moving,” Dr. Park added. “If it can survive death and return stronger, it sets a precedent for other brands to rescue abandoned gems.”
